THE BASTARD COUNTRY – Directed by Helen Cattermull was the first show presented in our present auditorium (when actors had to turn around and face the other way). It was officially opened by then Deputy Premier and Treasurer, Sir Gordon Chalk.

It was about a hard-working farming family on a property in outback Australia, owned by a violent domineering father, played by the late Clive Toohey. An angry Nick Diargos (John Stoutley) takes a job as farm hand, while planning revenge for something that happened in Greece during the war. He also falls in love with the farmer’s daughter (Julie Pozzan). Other cast included Graeme Osborne, Geoff Colledge and Peggy Danaher.
