Within minutes of the opening of the mystery thriller, audiences are plunged into the middle of an explosive situation. Famous novelist Janet Preston (Peg Danaher) arrives back at her Yorkshire Moors cottage after murdering her criminal husband (but yet to get rid of the body) to be confronted by a stranger with the same name as her husband, George (John Stoutley) his brutal accomplice who’s come looking for him after a botched bank robbery. The stranger blackmails Janet into passing him off as her husband (most of her Yorkshire friends hadn’t met him yet) while he hides out and plans his escape. In exchange he will help dispose of the first George’s body.

Sherry Barnes played Chris, (Janet’s secretary) and Ian Murdoch in his first Players role, played her fiancé Larry. Frances Schmeider was Mrs Bunting the housekeeper with the brilliant John Jones as the eccentric village vet. In his review, News-Mail editor, Ron Harvey wrote “he just cannot be faulted in character, in complete command of the role”. Regarding Peg’s performance, he wrote: “even in her facial expressions she looked the bitch playwright Leslie Sands intended her to be – acting of a high order” … “one of crime novelist Sands’ best known gripping theatre works. Even Sands himself would have been content had he been in the audience to see this Players cast’s brilliant work.” (thanks Mr Harvey)
