Adapted from the Operetta with music by Rudolf Friml, taking place in Old Paris in the time of Louis XI, the 14th century.
From verminous rabble to exquisite courtiers, rousing Song of the Vagabonds to the romantic Only a Rose; there were cut-throat, drunkard, braggart and poet Francois Villon (Bill Faine) who loves from afar, the high-born lady of the court, Katherine (Joyce Donnelly). She is promised to King Louis who pays an undercover visit to the infamous Tavern to check out his rival; plus, his partners in villainy including the debonair Tabarie (John Stoutley) who wooed the audience with his brilliant voice and swashbuckling charm.
Cutting to the chase, these two and other vagabonds thwart Burgundy’s attempts to overthrow Paris; narrowly missing the gallows and sword-wielding King’s mercenary soldiers.
Villon’s long-time mistress, the harlot Huguette (Betty Shaw) died by the sword while shielding her poet, leaving him free to wed Katherine … it was a complicated plot.
Other cast included the hilarious John Savage (Oliver, Master of the Bath), Shirley Hapin (“the acolyte”) and Robyn Edgar in the chorus. Sherry Barnes alternated roles between a Tavern Wench and Katherine’s friend, Lady Mary.
