Synopsis

Come from Away is based on the beautiful true story of the time when the isolated
community of Gander, Newfoundland, played host to the world. What started as an
average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover, when 38 planes,
carrying thousands of people from around the globe, were diverted to Gander’s airstrip on
September 11, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of
Gander cheered the stranded travellers with music, an open bar and the recognition that
we’re all part of a global family.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION regarding casting

Following our auditions for COME FROM AWAY, we wanted to provide some context regarding our casting decision.

Firstly, we would like to sincerely thank every person who auditioned. The talent, courage and commitment shown throughout the audition process made for some incredibly difficult decisions, and we know that not everyone will receive the outcome they were hoping for.

During the casting process, it became clear that while we had many outstanding auditions, we did not have an auditionee whom the directing panel believed could authentically portray the role of Beverley Bass, a woman in her mid-50s whose life experience and stage presence are central to telling this remarkable true story.

Before taking any further action, the directing team consulted with Bundaberg Players President, Nigel Dick, regarding the rules of audition and the options available to us. Following that discussion, the decision was made by us to approach our co-director, Rebecca Hutchins, and invite her to audition for the role.

Rebecca accepted that invitation and auditioned for Beverley in exactly the same way as any other performer. Following that audition, the panel unanimously agreed that she was the right person to bring this important character to life.

This was not a decision made lightly. In accepting the role, Rebecca is making a significant personal sacrifice. She has spent months preparing to direct this production alongside us, and stepping into this role means she will now balance both the demands of performing and continuing to support us as directors.

We know this decision may prompt questions. We simply ask our members and community to appreciate that every casting decision was made with one objective in mind, to tell this extraordinary story with authenticity, integrity and the strongest possible cast for our audiences.

Rebecca has our full confidence and support, and we know she will honour both the role of Beverley and the responsibility she has accepted.

We are incredibly excited to introduce the full cast and cannot wait to begin bringing COME FROM AWAY to life together.
